Jason Hammel's two-year contract with the Colorado Rockies is worth $7.75 million. Hammel gets $3 million this season and $4.75 million next year. He made $1.9 million in 2010, when he went 10-9 with a 4.81 ERA. Hammel had an up-and-down season last year. He strung together a 28 1-3-inning scoreless streak but also struggled with a dead arm in September.

Spring training in the Cactus League gives them an opportunity to practice in the sunshine against other teams they will be facing in the 2011 games. Most teams head to Arizona or Florida. The Giants have agreed to continue spring training at Arizona's Scottsdale Stadium through 2025. It is convenient to get to Phoenix from many parts of the country. Fly on Southwest Airlines or drive in to Scottsdale.

The Oakland Athletics have traded right-hander Clayton Mortensen to the Colorado Rockies for minor league righty Ethan Hollingsworth. Oakland also announced Monday it has agreed to terms with third baseman Andy LaRoche on a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. Mortensen was designated for assignment last Tuesday when the A's signed right-handed reliever Grant Balfour.

The Colorado Rockies are bringing back the big bat of Jason Giambi to go with the strong arm of right-handed reliever Matt Lindstrom. The hard-throwing Lindstrom and the Colorado Rockies agreed to a $6.6 million, two-year contract Monday, the same day the club agreed to a minor league contract with the 40-year-old Giambi, who could be a late-inning pinch-hitter.

February may not seem like a big month for sports, but it is the transition month between football and baseball. After the Super Bowl and Pro Bowl ends, within a couple of weeks pitchers and catchers report to spring training. 2011 looks to be a promising year for Shin-Soo Choo, Carlos Santana, Grady Sizemore and the rest of the Cleveland Indians.
